UNICA launches gasoline discount card giveaway; ethanol war over free markets or access to ethanol credit

Sign posted at a site originally scheduled to offer "54 cents off" discounts on gasoline as part of an UNICA promotion
In Washington, the undeclared trade war between Brazil and the US over the ethanol tariff heated up again yesterday with UNICA’s US head Joel Velasco reporting that “I’ve been told by my staff that there are three security guards at the Exxon stations on Capitol Hill to make sure that no one tries to sell discounted gas. Before and after pictures can be viewed here.
According to UNICA, “In less than a day, nearly 700 people responded to our offer and will soon be receiving a discounted gas card to make their summer vacation a little less expensive. This gas discount was the first of many chances for giveaways and great prizes from SweeterAlternative.com. The organization said that more details on its ethanol giveaway would be available soon via Twitter and Facebook,
Matt Hartwig, spokesman for the Renewable Fuels Association, said he had “no idea” who might be putting pressure on the promotion mangers of the two gas stations, but he added “It is inaccurate to say that Brazilian ethanol costs less than US ethanol. This is not about free markets. This is about Brazil getting access to the ethanol tax credit.”
