Opium poppies as biofuels feedstock for Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, biodiesel production is seen as a way to introduce a green economy to the country with the US military the most likely customer. Discussions are underway to use opium poppies as the biofuel feedstock, thereby helping to keep farming families from losing their market while at the same time fighting one of the world’s largest drug production centers.

Proponents of the plan agree however that poppyseed isn’t a very good biofuel feedstock and suggest safflower instead.
