UK climate minister says more renewables production needed

September 21, 2010 |

In the UK, Energy and Climate Change minister Chris Huhne said that the UK had to step up domestic production of renewable fuel if EU goals were to be met by 2020, and observed that the UK is ahead of only Malta and Luxembourg in the production of renewable energy.

“There will be plenty of business for biofuel products,” Huhne said in a Liberal Democrat party address, “but it can’t be at the cost of food-producing land at a time when the population is growing massively. There are severe planning problems around them at the moment but I am talking to DEFRA about how to get past those. We need to make progress.” He added, “There’s a lot of nimbyism around.”
