NGOs says palm oil carbon credits spread deforestation

In the Netherlands, Wetlands Watch International is claiming that the Clean Development Mechanism will no longer grant carbon credits to projects that produce palm oil from peat soils. Last year the CDM board approved a methodology for projects that produced biodiesel on degraded land.

The NGO claims that this methodology gave additional impetus for investment in palm oil plantations developed on carbon-dense peatland soils.
