Lula: "The rich world…will have to seek other alternatives, such as our sugar cane ethanol."

October 1, 2010 |

In Brazil, Brazil’s outgoing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said that “The rich world – Europe, Japan, the US – have an obligation to stop using pollutant fuel, so they will have to seek other alternatives, such as our sugar cane ethanol.”

The remarks were part of a speech Lula gave to mark the opening of eight sugar cane biomass power-plants, in Barra Bonita, in Sao Paulo state. “The US makes ethanol from corn,” Lula added, “as we do from sugar cane. However, the use of corn has pushed animal feed prices up and US ethanol is three times more expensive than ours, which is why they have created these import tariffs. But soon they will have to face reality and open up to our ethanol.”
