In Michigan, Ford Motor Company has launched an R&D effort on algal biofuels, through its Ford Systems Analytics and Environmental Sciences Department. To date, Ford researchers have visted XL Renewables, and Wayne State University’s National Biofuels Energy Laboratory, as well as conducting in-house R&D on the conversion of algal oil to biodiesel. “Algae have some very desirable characteristics as a potential biofuel feedstock and Ford wants to show its support any efforts that could lead to a viable, commercial-scale application of this technology,” said Sherry Mueller, a research scientist at Ford, told USA Today.
