UK's Renewable Fuels Agency axed in austerity move, sustainability criteria in jeopardy

In the UK, the Renewable Fuels Agency was one of hundreds of government agencies, known locally as quangos, that were axed last week as bureaucrats looked to streamline services and make budget cuts. The RFA was responsible for monitoring the biofuels used as part of the Renewable Fuels Transport Obligation as well as for setting and monitoring sustainability criteria for biofuels used in the UK market. The agency was in the process of implementing the sustainability criteria in the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive into national rules when it was eliminated.
