Agriculture, biodiversity forces war over OK of corn ethanol in South Africa

In South Africa, the African Center for Biosafety (ACB) issued a statement expressing concerns over the possible inclusion of corn in a revision of the country’s biofuels policy. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) is considering the policy change due to a large surplus of conventional and GM corn produced in the country this season and South African farmers’ difficulty to find suitable markets.

Corn was previously excluded from the policy due to food security concerns, which have since been disputed.
