Global Sugar Alliance seeks end to sugar, ethanol trade barriers

In the UK, the Global Sugar Alliance is seeking an end to trade subsidies for both ethanol and sugar, saying that trade barriers won’t help the industry to grow. The Australian Sugar Alliance Trade Committee says government intervention may be justified for a limited period to protect emerging industries, like ethanol. They say that if countries are going to establish it as a fully-fledged industry, it will need some initial government support, but the Alliance is consistent that in the longer run any fully-blown ethanol industry will have to stand on their own two feet.
