Owen Sound City Council ends biodiesel program, cites engine failures

In Canada, Owen Sound City Council voted January 10 to end their biodiesel program. Citing numerous problems such as major engine failures in their buses, which the city’s transit contractor blamed on the biodiesel blend and warnings that the use of biodiesel would void the bus warranties. Additionally, the contracted supplier was not able to keep up with demand, forcing the city to buy biodiesel sourced from soy from a non local company. The operations advisory committee which recommended halting the program in late December, was asked to continue monitoring developments in the biofuel industry and report back if there were any changes.
