Brazilian sugarcane closes harvest with strong growth in ethanol, sugar production

In Brazil, sugarcane crushing in the South-Central region of Brazil totaled 2.44 million tons in the second half of December 2010, a 76.39% drop in relation to the same period in 2009. Considering that the current harvest is almost complete, and comparing overall production at the end of December with final numbers for the previous harvest, there were increases of 2.41% in total cane crushing, 16.82% in sugar production and 6.71% in ethanol production. From the beginning of the harvest to the end of December 2010, ethanol production totaled 25.27 billion liters, up 10.34% compared to the same period a year before.
