India turns to cashew apples as ethanol feedstock

February 21, 2011 |

In India, the Horticulture Research Station in Ullal is proposing that cashew apple be researched for use as an ethanol feedstock.  Dr. Lakshman, Station Head stated, “Once the project is approved, an attempt will be made to find out which variety of the cashew apple can be used for bio-ethanol and what percentage alcohol is present in the cashew apple.

The research station has developed varieties for the coastal region that can produce 21.4 kg of seeds per tree per year and they have already distributed 60,000 seedlings to local farmers.

The Station would require a distillation unit and fermenter for the preparation on bio-ethanol.”  The project would cost Rs 300,000, and is awaiting approval by the Horticulture University in Bagalkot.
