Preem develops renewable diesel from Swedish forest waste

February 27, 2011 |

In Sweden, Preem has announced that they have developed renewable diesel from Swedish forestry industry residuals.  Taking six years and over USD $47 million to develop, the diesel is formulated by processing black liquor from pulp mills.

Preem reports that their diesel is molecularly identical to oil based diesel, but due to the fact that 20% of the diesel comes from renewables, their diesel qualifies the company for tax free status under Swedish law.  Called Evolution Diesel, Preem reports that they will produce 100,000 tonnes during 2011, starting in April.
