US soybean growers in uproar over lock-out from EU biodiesel market

March 21, 2011 |

In Missouri, the American Soybean Association has raised concerns with U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk over the European Union’s  Renewable Energy Directive (RED), particularly the part that is keeping American soybeans out of Europe for biofuel production.

The RED says soy-based biodiesel doesn’t meet its 35% minimum threshold for GHG reductions but a study funded by the United Soybean Board that shows American soy biodiesel actually reduces greenhouse gas emission by up to 52 percent.

More on the story.
