Highmark receives integrated biorefinery platform patent

March 25, 2011 |

In Canada, Highmark Renewables has received patent protection for their new Integrated bioRefinery platform technology in both the U.S and South Africa.  Co-chief executive of Highmark, Evan Chrapko stated that the patents will make it easier to get patent protection in other countries.

The patent protections cover Highmark’s anaerobic digester and add-on such as the biogas cleaning, prio-destruction modules and waste-processing machinery.  Currently, Highmark has a facility in the Vegreville area that uses manure to produce biogas and electricity.  The company plans an expansion next year to convert non-food grade wheat and organic wastes into bio-fertilizer, electricity and ethanol for fuel, which they report will make it the first facility to be an Integrated bioRefinery using their patented IMUS technology.
