Royal Swaziland Sugar redirects ethanol from EU to South Africa

March 31, 2011 |

In Swaziland, the Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation is redirecting ethanol exports traditionally sold into Europe into the Southern African Customs Union instead in an effort to compensate for weak prices in Europe and unfavorable exchange rates. A hailstorm earlier in the season damaged 200 hectares of young cane and 3,500 hectares of mature cane. The company is undergoing cost savings measures that will reduce production costs by 12%, and is installing a new boiler that will produce 30MW of electricity up from the current 10MW.
