EU proposes new method of taxing fuel to focus on CO2, energy content

In Belgium, the European Commission has proposed a new method for taxing fuel that will focus on CO2 emissions and energy content in order to promote the use of cleaner fuels. Relatively high taxes on biofuels compared to their energy content will be reduced while taxes on diesel will be higher, though officials say that won’t translate to higher pump prices.
