Biodiesel's emission-busting numbers: NBB

May 16, 2011 |

In Washington, the National Biodiesel Board is highlighting the significant health and air quality improvements from blending biodiesel with petroleum diesel, as Congress continues to look at supports for the biofuels industry in this budget-slashing year.

“According to the EPA,” the NBB said, “biodiesel has the following emissions properties compared with petroleum diesel:  Carbon Monoxide – on average 48 percent lower; Particulate Matter – 47 percent lower; Hydrocarbons – on average 67 percent lower; Sulfur emissions – essentially eliminated compared; NOx emissions – increase on average by 10 percent. However, biodiesel’s lack of sulfur allows the use of NOx control technologies that cannot be used with conventional diesel.”
