South Korea expands offshore seaweed biofuels farm

In South Korea, a research institute in Goheung County is expanding its 15 hectare seaweed for ethanol production off the coast of the Philippines to 100 hectares after initial tests have shown that the project will be successful on a larger scale. About $13.8 million is expected to be invested in the project over the next three years, with marine-based ethanol seen as one of 17 new growth engine industries and in the top 10 core technologies in the renewable energy sector.
