India could replace gasoline imports with ethanol by 2020

May 19, 2011 |

In India, new analysis shows that gasoline imports could be completely replaced by ethanol by 2020 thanks to enough bagasse, rice husk and sugar waste to produce as much as 50 billion liters (13 billion gallons) of ethanol without relying on food crops or disrupting agricultural land-use.

With the right policies and infrastructure in place to encourage the required investment, ethanol could replace 86% of gasoline use in the country.
