Indonesia's 2-year rainforest cutting ban

May 23, 2011 |

In Indonesia, the government has placed a 2-year ban on rainforest cutting after being promised up to $1 billion from Norway, according to Businessweek. After heavy amounts of deforestation caused by high demand for pulp, paper, and palm oil has lead Indonesia to become one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases, Norway has agreed to pay a fixed sum per ton of CO2 emissions reduced through rain forest preservation.

The deal, which is a step in Indonesia’s plan to reduce its greenhouse gases by 26% by 2020, will protect over 158 million acres of trees throughout the country.
