Pawlenty tells Iowans ethanol tax credits must go

May 24, 2011 |

In Iowa, former Minnesota government Tim Pawlenty kicked off his 2012 presidential campaign promising to tell the truth even if it made him unpopular. He began by telling Iowans that he was going to get rid of ethanol subsidies: “The truth about federal energy subsidies, including federal subsidies for ethanol, is that they have to be phased out,” Pawlenty said.

“We simply can’t afford them anymore. Conventional wisdom says you can’t talk about ethanol in Iowa or Social Security in Florida or financial reform on Wall Street. But someone has to say it. Someone has to finally stand up and level with the American people. Someone has to lead.”
