Ethanol plants in PA, IN shut down for summer as high corn prices bite

June 23, 2011 |

In Pennsylvania, Bionol Clearfield is shutting down temporarily due to high corn prices but that’s expected to turn around in mid-September when it hopes to come back online. Cleaning and maintenance will continue during the shutdown period. The facility first opened in 2010.

In Indiana, the state’s oldest ethanol plant in South Bend will lay off about 30 of its employees in July, roughly a quarter of the staff, as it shuts down operations this summer due to inability of corn supplies. The parent company New Energy Corp. is in trouble so its owners are putting it up for sale.
