Paris Air Show: KLM to launch 200 biofuels flights; Heliae, Azmark partner for algal fuels

June 24, 2011 |

In the Netherlands, Dutch KLM states they will launch over 200 flights on biokerosene between Amsterdam and Paris.  The fuel will be produced by Dynamic Fuels and supplied by SkyNRG, the consortium launched by KLM and North Sea Group and Spring Associates in 2009, with used cooking oil as the feedstock.  KLM stated that they are open to using different raw materials for the end product, as long as they meet a range of sustainability criteria such as reductions in CO2 emissions and minimum impact on biodiversity and food supply.

In Arizona, Heliae Development and Azmark Aero Systems announced at the Paris Air Show a collaboration to develop and promote algal fuels in jet engines.  Heliae has developed proprietary technologies and expertise for the production of jet fuel from algae and is currently planning to expand into mass production.  Azmark is working on small turbines ranging in size from a 300 watt generator to a 60 hp turboprop engine for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.
