EU: oilseed biofuels will miss carbon thresholds

June 28, 2011 |

In Belgium, the European Commission’s unpublished impact assessment on biofuels shows that biofuels produced from oilseeds will fail the minimum GHG thresholds no matter what ILUC factor is added as a way to counter indirect effects. By eliminating the use of oilseed-based biofuels, GHG savings could reach 70% by 2020 compared to 15% if oilseed-based fuels are allowed, far lower than the mandated 35% threshold.
