Running a pickup on ethanol from fallen apples

July 18, 2011 |

In Washington, Tim Bombaci has successfully run his 1990 Ford pickup on an ethanol he made in his own home out of apples that were slated for burial.

Bombaci, who used a bin of apples, a wood splitter, a washing machine, and a still in his backyard to produce enough ethanol to run his truck in a parade, was inspired a few years ago during a conversation with friends about the wasted fruit in orchards around Manson, WA.

His current goal is to fuel the truck entirely with ethanol for a full year, during which time Bombaci generally drives about 2000 miles.
