Zimbabwe turns back to biofuels to combat rising oil prices

July 19, 2011 |

In Zimbabwe, the biofuels sector is set to be resurrected after more than 20 years. The government recently announced new biofuels projects that will help the country to increase energy independence, create jobs in rural areas and combat climate change.

Up to 20 percent of Zimbabwe’s fuel imports will be replaced by biodiesel and ethanol and a 100 million litre per year ethanol plant is already under construction in Chisumbanje. The US$600 million project will produce ethanol from sugarcane, and is being developed with a private foreign investor, Green Fuel.
