USAF: cost of advanced biofuels at $35 per gallon, must come down

July 21, 2011 |

In Washington, the US Air Force says it’s ready to take as much biofuels as it can as soon as industry brings down the price of renewable jetfuel. Currently biofuels are running at 10 times the cost of jetfuel at $35 per gallon. The USAF has already approved synthetic fuels and expects to have the OK for biofuels by the end of 2012 with hopes that half of its fuel can come from alternative sources by 2016. There are plans underway to test alcohol-to-jet fuels from cellulosic and sugar feedstocks on an A-10 ground attack aircraft.
