The winner gets: Most votes advances to the second-round (round of 32), and a shot at the Biofuels Sweet Sixteen.

The loser: Goes home.

Laurels: Raizen is the JV formed by the 23rd and 40th 7th ranked companies (Shell, Cosan)  in the 2010-11 50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy poll. Abengoa is currently ranked #20.

The match-up: Two giants, and players in the development of cellulosic ethanol capacity.

Abengoa uses traditional fermentation of cereal grains and sugar cane for the commercial production of bioethanol; traditional transesterification for the production of biodiesel from cereal and vegetable oils; and multiple technology options for the commercial demonstration of cellulosic fuel production.

Raizen owns the largest ethanol production and distribution system in Brazil, and is developing bagasse-based cellulosic ethanol options that will coincide with the effort to use cane trash to provide power for the ethanol distilleries (previously generated by burning bagasse).
