Background: This is a second round, West Regional match-up between #4 seed Cobalt Technologies and #5 seed Ceres, in the 2011 Transformative Technologies tourney, from Biofuels Digest.

Laurels: Cobalt is the 14th ranked company in the 2010-11 50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy poll. Ceres is currently #13.

The match-up: It’s biobutanol vs Blade Energy crops.

Cobalt is aiming to demonstrate its cellulosic biobutanol technology, using woodchips as a feedstock, as soon as 2012 in a partnership with American Process. Cobalt, which makes n-butanol is aiming at the chemicals markets.

Ceres is commercializing its Blade energy crops, which are high-performing, high-yield energy grasses – with plans to increase drought and pest tolerance as well as further increase yields. Ceres recently filed for an IPO.
