Laurels: KiOR is the 47th ranked company in the 2010-11 50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy poll. Joule is currently #26.

The match-up: It’s synthetic bio vs catalytic pyrolysis. Joule took 58 percent of the votes in its first round battle with Dupont Danisco Cellulosic Ethanol. KiOR squeaked by Butamax 52-48..

It’s been a huge year for KiOR – IPO, progress towards its first commercial facility in Mississippi. It’s a catalytic pyrolysis technology – the first to (reportedly) overcome the stability and upgrading issues that have plagued pyrolysis technologies.

Joule has been running hot all year – heading for commercialization of its technology as soon as 2012 with a full-scale demonstration.
