POET vs Honeywell's UOP: Who's the Best?

Background: This is a second round, Central Regional match-up between #4 seed POET and #5 seed Honeywell’s UOP, in the 2011 Transformative Technologies tourney, from Biofuels Digest.

The winner gets: Most votes advances to the Sweet Sixteen (round of 16), and a shot at the Biofuels Elite Eight.

Laurels: POET is the 3rd ranked company in the 2010-11 50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy poll. Honeywell’s UOP is currently #26.

The match-up: It’s advanced cellulosic ethanol vs hydroprocessing and pyrolysis. POET took 61 percent of the votes in its first round battle with Avello Bioenergy. Honeywell’s UOP edged GlycosBio, 51-49

POET is getting closer to building its 25 Mgy Project LIBERTY cellulosic ethanol plant – having landed a DOE conditional commitment for a loan guarantee which it is now aiming to close; its enzymatic hydrolysis process converts corn cobs into ethanol.

UOP has been powering both thw aviation fuels sector with a series of partnerships with Solazyme, Sapphire and others, and also is a partner in Ensyn with a technology converting wastes and residues to fuels and chemicals.
