Gevo, Amyris, Solazyme lead winners into Transformative Technologies 2011 sweet sixteen

Round two voting finished on Friday in the Transformative Technologies 2011 tournament. Here are the final vote totals (expressed in percentages).

“The subscribers have spoken, and there were many surprises,” commented Digest editor Jim Lane. “INEOS Bio upsetting #1 seed Coskata, and tournament Cinderella OriginOil defeating the mighty Sapphire Energy – those really stand out.

Of the remaining 16 companies and technologies, 11 use synthetic biology (Gevo, Terrabon, Amyris, Novozymes, LS9, Solazyme, Cobalt, Codexis, INEOS Bio, Qteros, Mascoma and Joule), which is shaping up as the big winner in the tournament. Because of head-to-head matchups, at least four synth bio companies will advance to the Elite Eight, and at least one to the Final Four (in the East Region, where all other technology platforms have been eliminated),
