Qteros vs Joule Unlimited: Who's the Best?

Background: This is an Elite Eight (quarter-final), Eastern Regional match-up between #4 seed Qteros and #7 seed Joule Unlimited, in the 2011 Transformative Technologies tourney, from Biofuels Digest.

The winner gets: Most votes advances to the Final Four (semi-finals), and a shot at the Championship.

Laurels: Qteros is the 21stranked company in the 2010-11 50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy poll. Joule is currently #22.

The match-up: It’s the Battle for Massachusetts, with two outstanding magic bugs that do just “a little bit more” than the average organism, and engineering solutions that make fuel and chemical-producing systems out of promising synthetic biology.

Qteros took 67 percent of the votes in its first round battle with Inbicon, defeated Algenol 52-48 in the second round, and edged by INEOS Bio 52-48 in the Sweet Sixteen. Joule took 58 percent of the votes in its first round battle with Dupont Danisco Cellulosic Ethanol, upset #2 seed KiOR 53-47 in the second round, and slipped by Mascoma 52-48 in the Sweet Sixteen.

Qteros is developing the Q Microbe for consolidated bioprocessing, and has a partnership with Praj to incorporate its magic bug in a Process Development Package that Praj will offer to its customers.

Joule has been running hot all year – heading for commercialization of its technology as soon as 2012 with a full-scale demonstration.
