Canadians push for food industry reform to assist sustainability movement

In Canada, citizens concerned with balancing the need for sustainable energy, and the need for sustainable food supplies are putting pressure on policy makers to cut red tape and increase investment and productivity in agriculture.
According to Food & Consumer Product of Canada, food industry regulations have not been significantly updated since 1953 and do not address the issues that have arisen during the “green revolution”.

These include high-yield agriculture; a push to utilize food crops to generate biofuels; and using non-crop plants such as trees and seaweeds to produce some food components. Federal, provincial and local governments are being called upon to update food industry regulations to ensure food security and increase opportunities for sustainable energy production.
