BASA says biofuels ready for South Africa

September 15, 2011 |

In South Africa, the South African Biofuels Association (BASA) announced that the Country’s bioeconomy has been hindered by a lack of regulations and government policy, despite possessing the necessary technology and resources for a robust biofuels production.

BASA claims that South Africa could increase its grains capacity by over 3-million tons very quickly and create a viable biofuels market, which would create 75,000 direct jobs and 20,000 indirect jobs. It could also save the country nearly $2bn in foreign exchange. BASA is calling on the Government to put biofuels more prominently on its agenda and develop strong regulatory guidelines for the industry.
