The match-up: Two early stage but closely watched companies have made it through to the tournament final.

Terrabon prevailed over Metabolix by 65-35 in the first round, then ZeaChem 53-47 in the round of 32, while recording another 53-47 victory over Virent in the Sweet Sixteen, went on to defeat Gevo 58-42 in the Elite Eight quarterfinal, and sailed past Novozymes 70-30 in the semi-final.

Joule defeated Qteros 53-47 in the Elite Eight quarterfinal, took 58 percent of the votes in its first round battle with Dupont Danisco Cellulosic Ethanol, upset #2 seed KiOR 53-47 in the second round, slipped by Mascoma 52-48 in the Sweet Sixteen, and bested Solazyme 57-43 in the semi-final.

Terrabon’s MixAlco is an advanced bio-refining technology used by Terrabon’s experienced staff of chemical engineers to convert low-cost, readily available, non-food, non-sterile biomass into valuable chemical precursors such as organic acids, ketones and secondary alcohols that can be processed into renewable hydrocarbon fuels.

Joule has been running hot all year – heading for commercialization of its technology as soon as 2012 with a full-scale demonstration.
