BP mulling 70 million gallon cane ethanol plant in Texas?

September 28, 2011 |

In Texas, BP has leased 300 acres from Henderson Liberty Farms in Liberty County to grow energy cane that will then be used as seed cane when planted on a further 3,400 acres next year. BP is planning a 70 million gallon per year cellulosic ethanol plant, and though the exact siting hasn’t yet been determined, it needs to be within 25 miles of the feedstock. The facility will need at least 50,000 acres of energy cane to supply it, and BP is talking with farmers to contract farm the cane rather than having to farm all of it themselves.
