NZ contemplates spin-off of state-owned Solid Energy to fund clean energy

October 25, 2011 |

In New Zealand, the government is exploring a partial sale of state-owned Solid Energy, including spinning off its biodiesel business, in order to fund capital intensive energy development including lignite-to-diesel and urea.

Both products are imported currently, but producing them locally would save on the carbon emissions associated with their transport, the government says, while more carbon offsets like planting trees and CCS investments could further reduce their impact. The partial sale and spinoff are likely seen for 2013.
