Use biodiesel, not veggie oil, says New Jersey

October 27, 2011 |

In New Jersey, it turns out that Westwood and Woodcliff Lakes’ attempts to reduce their diesel bill by using locally recycled cooking oil may not be exactly legal as the state’s Department of Environmental Protection says the fuel they’re using does not meet ASTM standards as a biodiesel nor has the state registered the use of used vegetable oil as a safe fuel.

The state says that the oil would either have to go under transesterfication to become biodiesel or the trucks using the fuel would have to be converted to run on vegetable oil as Westchester County did in 2008.
Both cities are currently in discussions with the DEP.
