Finns cut cost of fuel cells by 60 percent, using ethanol

December 23, 2011 |

In Finland, Aalto University researchers have discovered a method for manufacturing fuel cells that require 60 per cent less of costly catalysts than current methods.  By using the Aalto University researchers’ ALD method, the anode cover can be much thinner and more even than before, lowering costs and increasing quality.

Additionally, by using alcohol fuels such as methanol or ethanol, palladium can be used as the catalyst, instead of the twice as expensive platinum that hydrogen requires.  The ALD method using palladium can cut costs significantly, increasing the chances of bringing an affordable fuel cell to market.
