Sony showcases bio-battery using cardboard, shredded paper

| December 30, 2011

In Japan, Sony displayed a bio-battery at the Eco-Products exhibition in Tokyo.  The battery used shredded paper or cardboard, dropped into a water based solution with specific enzymes that released sugar from the paper.  Additional enzymes and oxygen were used to develop current and hydrogen, along with gluconolactone.

At the show, the battery powered a small fan, and children were invited to “feed” the battery.  This project is a follow up to the juice powered battery previously developed by Sony.
