Brazilian sugarcane investment down 90 percent since 2008; debt, taxes blamed

In New York, Bloomberg Finance estimates that Brazilian sugarcane producers only invested $700 million in new plantations last year, compared to $7.84 billion in 2008. They put the blame on the government, saying that taxes are still too high, keeping producers indebted and unable to invest in increased production that would secure the country’s ethanol supply.
