Thailand to build pilot plant for bio-based plastics

April 11, 2012 |

In Thailand, the Bangkok Post reports that the Industry Ministry’s Thai Industrial Standards Institute is putting together regulations, rules and standards for bioplastics, covering both biodecomposable and biodegradable plastics.  The TISI has committed to establishing a certification system as well as a lab for testing biodegradability of bioplastics.

The article states that Federation of Thai Industries, the Thai Bioplastics Industry Association and the National Innovation Agency have joined together to build a bioplastics pilot plant, along with capital investment of 300 million baht.  They are working to allow private investors to become partners and a list of possible investors is expected to be announced next month.

If the plan comes together, then by 2015, the plant will operational with an announced capacity running between 1,000 to 10,000 tonnes.
