ETH Bioenergia to invest $484M in Brazilian ethanol expansion

In Brazil, ETH Bioenergia, the ethanol division of industrial conglomerate Odebrecht, plans to invest $484 million (BRL1 bln) this year to expand its production. Of the entire sum, $290.4 million (BRL 600,000) will fund the planting of more sugar cane to help alleviate supply shortages. The company aims to add 115,000 ha of cane in 2012 in addition to 100,000 ha planted last season, doubling the company’s planted area to more than 400,000 ha.

The company is able to process 35 million tons of cane, but the 2012 crush is estimated at only 20 million. By 2014, ETH will have a cane crushing capacity of 40 million tons producing, 3 billion liters of ethanol.
