CleanStar Mozambique gets “Screw Business as Usual” award.

July 4, 2012 |

In Mozambique, CleanStar Mozambique received the “Screw Business as Usual” Award on the sidelines of the “Rio+20” UN Conference on Sustainable Development from Richard Branson’s charity Virgin Unite. “This award recognizes and celebrates extraordinary businesses that work in a “radically different way for a common future” according to Jean Oelwang, CEO of Virgin Unite.

“Last year urban households across Africa spent $10 billion on charcoal for cooking,” said Sagun Saxena, Managing Partner of CleanStar Ventures. “The ‘business as usual’ approach to this market is to DO NOTHING!  We’ve created a new business to target this problem as a market opportunity. In Mozambique women are now using modern cookstoves that burn a liquid fuel produced locally by CleanStar and sold price-‐competitively with charcoal.”
