US, Australia sign naval biofuels accord

July 20, 2012 |

In Hawaii, US Navy Secretary Ray Mabus announced that the US Navy and the Royal Australian Navy have signed a technology co-operation agreement for advanced biofuels.

Mabus noted that the RAN participated in the Green Strike Force biofuels demonstration as part of the 22-nation RIMPAC naval exercises, and refueled a RAN helicopter on board the USS Nimitz with advanced biofuels during the exercises.

“The agreement,” said Mabus, “shows that energy independence and security is not just a concern of the US; it speaks volumes for the development of alternatives to the price and supply shocks that fossil fuels can be subject to.”
