Korea asks U.S. to cut corn supply for biofuels amidst rumors regarding drought

In Korea, the top grain importer has sent a message to the US: cut their use of corn in biofuel production to ensure stable food supplies through this year’s drought. The U.S. supplies over 80% of South Korea’s corn and as the drought worsens across the county, South Korea is becoming concerned that they will not be able to import their food from elsewhere. “Purchases from South America and Eastern Europe aren’t a solution and substitution is also not possible as most grain and oilseed prices are surging,” said Kim Chi Young, director for the purchasing division at the Korea Feed Association.
