In Canada, Mississauga-based Methes Energies Canada Inc. is set for the grand opening of its new biodiesel plant in Sombra on August 10, at its 22-acre site on the Holt Line West. It will commence production of an estimated 50 million litres of biodiesel shortly thereafter, company president Nicholas Ng told the Observer. His company makes biodiesel from used cooking oil and waste animal fats. ìThe common feed stocks we would be using are used cooking oil that’s been collected in different restaurants,î Ng said. The oil is mixed with ethanol and another base chemical and put through a series of ìreaction columns,î regulating the temperature and pressure. ìOnce it’s converted over to biodiesel it almost flows like water. It’s a lighter product, it’s a less viscous product, and that will enable the engine to run the fuel properly, more efficiently.î He said the biodiesel will will be supplied to local refineries like Suncor and Shell to include in their fuels and he is also planning to sell to U.S. customers in the U.S.
