In Minnesota, Cargill Inc. has filed a lawsuit with the U.S. District Court in New York, claiming that it has been victimized by the sale of fraudulent renewable energy credits. Cargill claims that it arranged to purchase 1.2 million biodiesel credits in 2010 from a broker in New York, but later learned that the credits’ renewable identification numbers (RIN) were invalid. RINs are unregulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and several oil companies have claimed to be scam victims.
